Post-election stress is a common phenomenon. Coping skills and other strategies can provide relief. Acknowledging your emotions, minimizing exposure, practing self-care, & seeking professional support helps reduce stress and promote resilience!

Post-election stress is real! Political environements are often very tense and may leave individuals with an influx of emotions ranging from fear, sadness, guilt, uncertainty, anxiety, frustration, and flat out anger. There are many ways to manage and cope with post-election stress.

A few strategies include:

1. Acknowledging Your Emotions

Emotions are not good or bad, they are simply emotions. It's important to understand that it’s okay to feel how you feel so that you are free to  process your emotions more effectively. Your mental health is essential and focusing on things that nuture your well-being takes priority.

2. Limiting Exposure to News and Social Media

Prolonged exposure can increase stress and anxiety levels. Limit your consumption of news outlets and take breaks from social media to allow time for decompression. Consider setting specific times to check on news updates while finding ways to disconnect afterwards.

3. Focusing on What You Can Control 

Focusing on things within your control helps reduce feelings of hopelessness. Engaging in activities that promote your well-being (eating healthy, practicing healthy sleep hygiene, engaging in hobbies, exercising, meditation, yoga, progessive muscle relaxation, and other healthy distractions like getting involved in your local community can help bring a sense of fullfillment and relief).

4. Talking About It

Sometimes sharing your thoughts or feelings with a trusted friend or  family member can help alleviate stress by providing validation and support. Make sure converstations are respectful and calm.

5. Seeking Professional Support

If your stress, anxiety, or other emotions are intefering with your daily tasks or becoming overwhelming or persistent, consider reaching out to a mental health professional. Therapy can be beneficial by providing a safe, supportive space to identify and process triggers, gain perspective, and develop healthy coping mechanisms to manage difficult emotions.
